Sephiras nt Philip Davis Well there is no exact answer. Generally castle builders did try to get the great tower as tall as their money and resources allowed. This might be done by building a relatively small tower on top of a large earth mound (The castle motte). Existing mottes in England measure from just a few feet (1-2 meters) up to 80 feet (24m) for Thetford. Particually tall stone towers needed good foundations so tend to be built on ground soil or rock. Again these towers vary in height. The original tower at Chepstow (more a hall really) was just two storeys. One of the smallest Norman sq towers in England is Clitheroe at 43 feet high (13m) whereas the Rochester rises to 113 feet (34m). Some other castles are sited where the tower can be seen from miles away so Corfe castle is sited on top of a hill and is very impresive, although not that tall
